도예가 박종진은 종이 타월과 흙물을 교차 적층하고, 적층된 더미를 고온의 불에 구워 형태를 만든다. 종이 위 붓질의 면적과 색채, 종이 접기의 방식과 밀도 그리고 이들의 연결과 조화를 시도하며 도자 예술의 새로운 시각적 자극과 질감에 관하여 연구한다. 

이번 전시에서는 ‘예술적 지층 Artistic Stratum’을 주제로 적층을 통한 색채의 변화를 보여줄 수 있는 총 4종의 연작(항아리, 지층, 패치, 붕괴된 형태)을 선보인다. 다양한 방식으로 종이를 구기고 접고 말아 만든 다채로운 밀도와 주름은 흙물의 흡수에 직접적인 영향을 미치는데, 이는 정도에 따라 표면에 독특한 표정과 힘의 세기를 만든다. 불은 적층된 더미를 단단하게 만들어줄 뿐 아니라 때론 작가의 의도를 부수고 변형을 주기도 한다. 이러한 의도와 우연이 만들어낸 박종진의 예술적 지층은 시공간 속 리듬의 강약과 율동감을 보여준다.

종이를 접고 흙물을 바르고 서로를 잇고 쌓고 불로 구우며 완성된 예술적 지층은 오랜 시간 퇴적되어 나타난 자연의 지층처럼 한 계단씩 쌓으며 만들어낸 작가의 시간과 노동의 흔적 그 자체다. 그 시간을 쌓는 동안 작가가 느꼈을 즐거움과 인내를 이번 전시에서 관람객들과 함께하고 싶다.

Park Jongjin is an artist who creates millefeuille-like vessels by firing at high temperatures the richly layered paper towels painted with clay slips repeatedly. The exhibition showcases his four series Artistic Jar, Artistic Stratum, Artistic Patch, and Collapsed Form, having different shapes, structures and colour spectrums varied with the ways of layering paper and connecting it, and colour changes.

The artist has carefully examined the identity and the visuality of new ceramic art by experimenting with brushstrokes and colours and the ways of folding, varying the density of paper and their connection and combination. He has always prioritised the harmony and co-prosperity between individuals rather than the distinction and originality of each one.

Different densities and creases vary depending on how the artist crumples, folds, and rolls paper towels, directly impacting the absorption of liquid clay by the paper. It brings unique expressions and energies to the artwork’s surface. Firing makes works not only solid but also transformed. All this raises rhythmical senses and dynamics in people’s eyes and minds, even in space and time we are standing. Hoping this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to explore the artist’s creative processes, including folding paper, painting clay slips, connecting and layering paper blocks, and firing, and to find new visual languages of contemporary ceramic art and its charms. Through this exhibition, it is also our hope that viewers can share the fun and enjoyment the artist felt while working.
