나의 작업은 일회용 제품으로 가득한 우리의 일상에서 시작되었다. 우리가 매일 만나는 일회용 제품들은 내용물을 보관하는 것 이상의 가치를 부여받지 못하고, 보잘것 없는 재료로 여겨져, 한 번 쓰고 이내 버려진다. 게다가 팬데믹 이라는 세계적인 위기 속에서 일회용 제품의 사용량이 증가했는데 이것이 오히려 환경오염의 주요 원인 중 하나로 여겨지며 여전히 해결해야 할 골칫 거리로 취급받고 있다.

전통적으로 금, 은, 보석은 이런 일회용 제품과는 달리 그 자체가 아름답기도 하고, 가치있는 존재로 여겨져 장신구의 주된 재료로 사용되어 왔다. 하지만 공예의 아름다움이 재료의 가치에 비례하는 것만은 아니다.

하찮은 재료, 심지어 버려지는 재료로 아름다운 장신구를 만들 수 있다면, 그리고 그것이 환경을 되살리는 일에 도움이 된다면 그 장신구의 가치는 다이아몬드나 금으로 만들어진 그 어떤 것보다 훨씬 더 높은 평가를 받을 것이다. 이것이 내가 일회용품 중 하나인 알루미늄 캔에 주목하여 작업을 시작한 이유다. 알루미늄 캔은 그 자체로 아름다운 색상과 패턴을 가지고 있어서 다양한 회화적 표현이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 나는 이러한 캔을 별다른 채색과정 없이 그저 분해하고 재구성하는 과정을 통해서만 작업을 진행한다.

알루미늄 캔으로 작업을 하면서 느끼는 또 다른 즐거움 중 하나는 캔 위에 새겨진 로고, 패턴, 이미지가 그 캔이 만들어지는 지역의 문화와 취향을 간접적으로 반영한다는 점이다. 일회용 알루미늄 캔이 완전히 분해되는데 약 500년 정도의 시간이 걸린다고 하니 400년이나 500년 후의 누군가는 지금의 나의 작업을 통해 2024년의 모습을 가늠해 볼 수도 있겠구나 하는 재미있는 상상을 해본다.

이제껏 한 번도 경험해보지 못했던 코로나-19라는 전 세계적 위기를 통해 알루미늄 캔이라는 생각지도 못했던 재료를 장신구의 소재로 만나게 된 것은 아주 우연히 발견한 뜻밖의 일이었다. 하지만 어찌보면 이 시대가 요구하는 가치의 변화에 부응한 필연적 만남이었을지도 모른다는 생각이 든다.

가장 상업적이고 가장 많이 버려지는 재료를 활용해, 보다 예술적이고 아름다운 작품을 만드는 일. 이것이 내가 일회용 제품 중 하나인 알루미늄 캔과 함께 지속적으로 해 나가고픈 일이다.

나는 버려지는 알루미늄 캔으로 바닷속 산호의 모습을 표현한다. 급격한 기후 변화에 따른 수온상승으로 백화현상을 겪으면서 점점 본연의 아름다운 색을 잃어 가는 산호의 모습이 마치 인간다움 이라는 소중한 가치를 잃어가는 우리의 모습과 닮아있다는 생각이 들었다.

이번 전시를 통해서 나를 비롯한 많은 사람들이 무심코 버려지는 사소한 것들에 관심을 갖게 되길 바란다. 그리고 일회용품 활용은 물론 환경과 우리 자신의 지속 가능한 삶을 위해 다시 한번 고민하고 노력하는 계기가 되길 바래본다.

The origin of creating my jewelries was our everyday life filled with disposable items. Disposables we meet every second are often considered no more than just a container of contents,seen as trifle, used only once, and be discarded. Besides, the usage of disposable products has drastically increased due to the Pandemic, being regarded as one of the Major causes of environmental pollution and a consisitent headache to the global society.

The disposables were originally excluded as materials for jewelry, while the gold and silver have been well-used due to the beauty and value they hold.

Unlike the disposables, gold and silver have been traditional materials of jewelry as they were highly respected for their beauty and value.

Minor materials, or even discarded materials can transform to beautiful jewelry. If this jewelry can take part in saving the environment, its value would exceed the one that is made of diamond or gold. This is the reason I started to pay my attention on disposable aluminum cans, and work on it.

Aluminum cans possess inherent beauty in their colors and patterns, offering diverse possibilities for artistic expression. I proceed with my work solely by dismantling and re assembling the pieces of cans without any additional coloring process.

Another fun aspect of working with alumium cans is the indirect reflection of the current culture or preferences of the region where the can was produced through its logos, patterns, or images. As it take about 500 years for disposables to fully decompose, I sometimes imagine that someone 400 or 500 years from now might glimpse the year 2024 through the work I’m doing.

Bumping into aluminum cans through the unprecedented global crisis of COVID-19 might seem like a coincidental discovery, but it might be an inevitable encounter in response to the changing value demanded by the era. Utilizing the most commercialized and frequently discarded materials to creat more artistic and beautiful works is what I continuously strive for.

I depict the figure of coral with discarded aluminum cans. The corals lose their beautiful color due to a bleaching phenomenon caused by raising water temperature. The gradual loss of their natural color resembles the gradual loss of our precious value, the humanity.

Through this exhibition, I hope That many people including me can become interested in the trivial items that are casually discarded. And I also hope it will be an opportunity to strive for our sustainable future of the precious nature and our lives as well as disposables
