《Frozenism: The Frozen Archive》
Frozen Landscape
Sinking Cities
Last Habitat
Future Fossils
History is often written after loss. Nature leaves no such luxury.
Frozenism: The Frozen Archive is a conceptual archive of a world disappearing before our eyes. It preserves the fragile landscapes, cities, and living beings that climate change continues to transform—not as nostalgic memories of a distant past, but as urgent records of a present that is already slipping away.
Glaciers retreat. Coastlines erode. Forests burn. Coral reefs fade. Species disappear. Entire ecosystems that evolved over thousands of years are being altered within a single human lifetime. Yet despite unprecedented scientific knowledge and global awareness, humanity continues to participate in the very processes that accelerate this loss. This unresolved contradiction lies at the heart of the exhibition.
Working within the conceptual framework of Frozenism, Sung Suh transforms transparent materials—including resin, acrylic, and epoxy—into sculptural archives that evoke the visual and symbolic qualities of ice. Photographic images of landscapes, endangered wildlife, and vulnerable cities are embedded within multiple translucent layers, where they blur, fracture, overlap, and gradually dissolve. Like memories preserved within ancient glaciers, these images exist between preservation and disappearance.
Bubbles, cracks, flowing textures, and shifting transparencies are not merely aesthetic elements. They echo the physical processes through which ice records time while simultaneously revealing its own impermanence. The sculptures become temporal landscapes where memory remains visible even as it begins to vanish.
The exhibition unfolds through four interconnected series:
Frozen Landscape preserves glaciers, forests, wetlands, and coral reefs as fragile environmental strata.
Sinking Cities archives coastal cities threatened by rising seas, where urban landscapes appear submerged beneath translucent layers.
Last Habitat holds endangered species suspended within frozen structures, reflecting the collapse of habitats that once sustained life.
Future Fossils imagines today's world as tomorrow's archaeological remains—artifacts preserved not from the distant past, but from a future that may remember what we failed to protect.
Rather than documenting environmental catastrophe alone, The Frozen Archive examines the paradox of contemporary existence: we possess the knowledge to recognize irreversible loss, yet continue to live as though nothing has changed. The archive therefore becomes more than a repository of disappearance—it becomes evidence of collective choice, memory, and responsibility.
These transparent sculptures are not monuments to extinction. They are living archives suspended between warning and hope, preservation and transformation. They ask a simple yet unsettling question:
What kind of world will remain, and what will future generations discover frozen within the archives we leave behind?
그의 작업은 Fred A. Hillbruner Artists Awards, IPA International Photography Awards(Fine Art), CLIO Awards, IDEA Awards, Red Dot Design Award, Creativity Awards, HOW Awards 등 국제적인 기관과 시상을 통해 독창성과 작품성을 인정받았습니다.
Sung Suh is a New York–based Conceptual Artist, Socially Engaged Artist, Creative Leader, and the founder of the conceptual art framework Frozenism. His multidisciplinary practice investigates the intersections of time, memory, archives, nature, environmental change, and society, exploring how art can connect personal experience with collective memory and contemporary social issues.
Educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and Hongik University, Suh developed an interdisciplinary practice spanning photography, sculpture, installation, video, performance, sound, and visual communication. Drawing upon both historical and contemporary artistic methodologies, his work moves fluidly across media while maintaining a strong conceptual foundation.
Suh began developing Frozenism through his 2010 SAIC thesis project, Frozen. Since then, he has expanded it into an evolving conceptual art framework grounded in the philosophy "Time Frozen, Art Alive." Within Frozenism, the processes of freezing, condensation, and melting become conceptual and visual metaphors for preservation, disappearance, transformation, and the emotional temporality of human experience.
Rather than functioning as an artistic style or a single body of work, Frozenism proposes a methodology for interpreting time, memory, and traces of existence. Ice operates simultaneously as material and symbolic structure, while memory is understood as a living archive—continuously preserved, transformed, fragmented, and reimagined through time.
Working across photography, installation, sculpture, moving image, sound, performance, and visual communication, Suh investigates how layered structures of memory shape personal identity, collective consciousness, and social narratives. In recent years, his practice has expanded toward climate change, ecological fragility, environmental vulnerability, and the transformation of urban landscapes, examining how contemporary crises can be preserved as living archives through the conceptual lens of Frozenism.
Viewing art as a platform for social engagement and cultural dialogue, Suh explores the ways individual memory intersects with social structures, historical events, and our shared future. His work encourages critical reflection, public participation, and a deeper awareness of the relationships between humanity, nature, and collective responsibility.
Suh has presented his work internationally through ten solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions and curatorial projects in New York, Chicago, Boston, Seoul, Germany, Belgium, and Hong Kong, including participation in Art Central Hong Kong. His work has received international recognition through honors including the Fred A. Hillbruner Artists Awards, IPA International Photography Fine Art, CLIO, IDEA IDSA, Red Dot, Creativity, and HOW.
His works are held in the permanent collections of The Henry Ford Museum, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Library, and the Joan M. Flaxman Library, among other public and institutional collections.
Through Frozenism, Sung Suh continues to develop an evolving conceptual framework that investigates memory, time, material transformation, and collective responsibility. His practice proposes art as a living archive—one that preserves what society risks forgetting while inviting viewers to reconsider the futures they are actively shaping.
